Brotherhood Gate Spiritualist Church SNU
The Church was originally named Brotherhood Gate and Universal Church. Sometime before 1940 (there is no record of the exact date) the Church was moved to our present address.
The President at the time was Mrs Medhurst who passed to spirit in 1949 leaving a legacy of £3000 to the Church. Unfortunately, due to the fact that there were no Trustees in the Church, the legacy could not be paid out. Although the Church was previously Christian orientated, it was decided to join the SNU (Spiritualist National Union), who in turn assumed the responsibility of appointing trustees and taking the necessary steps to legalise the Church. It took eight years before the legacy from Mrs Medhurst was paid out.
The new President, Mrs Ticehurst inherited all the problems as the cost to alter the building into the Church was far more than the legacy, so the Building Pool Fund of the SNU was successfully approached for a loan. Mrs Ticehurst was instrumental in laying the foundation for the Church and was President until 1967.
The following people took up Presidency of the Church, from 1968 to 1969 Mr. R. Verral, from 1968 to 1986 Mrs E Gibson and 1986 to 2007 Mrs Betty Horne. Mrs Horne retired in March 2007 after 21 years service. Mrs Paula Plant is the current serving President of the Church.
